Family Housing Association’s (FHA) new apartment block, close to its award-winning Hazel Court site in Sketty Park has been given a name thanks to the pupils at Parkland Primary School.
The latest addition for the over 55’s will be known as Ty Derw (Welsh for Oak House) after Year 4 children from Parkland Primary School in Sketty were recently invited to view the scheme before being tasked with coming up with a name for the brand new apartment block within the development.
As well as coming up with a name for the site containing 43 apartments, the Year Four pupils at nearby Parkland Primary School also drew a keepsake mural and filled some time capsules which will be buried on the new site.
Ty Derw is a stand-alone project in the vicinity of the award-winning Hazel Court, which provides spacious, well-appointed apartments and communal facilities for over 55s. When originally built it was the first of its kind in Wales, offering one and two-bed apartments as well as an on-site gym, hair salon and restaurant, which is open to both tenants and the local community.
Phillip Stapley, FHA’s Manager at the Hazel Court site, said: “We’re thrilled with the children’s input to the new project. As a community based organisation, we like to engage with local people wherever possible and become a part of their community. It was great to meet the children on their visit and their enthusiasm was infectious! We look forward to welcoming them again in the future.”
Mrs Parton Y4 teacher at Parkland Primary School said: “As a school we were delighted with the opportunity to engage with our community. The pupils had a really fun day and were surprised at how homely the scheme will be, nothing at all to what they thought! We are looking forward to returning when the development has been completed and working on future events together.”
