Pride 2021!

Published on Jun 29, 2021

As Pride Month comes to an end, we would like to take the time to be transparent about our values.

Research shows that LGBTQ+ people are more likely to find themselves homeless than their non-LGBTQ+ peers, comprising up to 24% of the youth homeless population (akt 2012). They are highly likely to have experienced familial rejection, abuse and violence (69%, akt 2015), and while homeless, they are significantly more likely to experience targeted violence, sexual exploitation, substance misuse, and physical & mental health problems than other homeless people. Therefore, as a Housing Association;

  • we do what we can to improve the lives of people in our local communities, and we NEVER discriminate on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.
  • ‘Respect’ is one of our core values, so we treat people as individuals and value diversity
  • we recognise that LGBTQ+ people face additional barriers to accessing support, so we are committed to being flexible in the face of these challenges and tailoring support wherever necessary.
  • our commitment to fair and equal treatment of everyone, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, extends to the staff who work at Family Housing as well as the tenants.
  • being diverse and inclusive are key objectives of our strategy, and are therefore central aspects of how we are working to grow as an organisation.
  • we ensure our recruitment process is fair and allows us to employ people with the right skills, abilities and diversity to ensure the organisation is properly managed.

Family Housing is committed to continually learning and developing innovative ways to support our local communities. Therefore, if you would like to talk to us about our approach to supporting the LGBTQ+ community, please feel welcome to get in touch with us using our contact form.

To conclude, we hope everyone has had a safe and happy Pride Month! We can’t wait to get back out into the community to celebrate Pride again post-COVID.
